William Hughes
(English, 1842 - 1901)

William Hughes was an acclaimed 19 th century English painter of still life and nature scenes. He was born in Lanarkshire in 1842 and began his studies in 1862 at the British Institute. Hughes studied under George Lance and William H. Hunt.

Hughes was very prolific, producing quite a number of decorative paintings in oil. He is best known for his nature scenes, an example of which were the five large bird paintings that he was commissioned to paint for the hall of Lord Calthorpe's home in Grosvenor Square. He exhibited regularly at the British Institute and the Royal Academy as well as other major London exhibitions such as the Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street , and Grosvenor Gallery. The Cape Town Museum has a number of William Hughes' still life pieces.
