Noted scholars recognize Robert as an exceptional professional artist and an expert in fine art. After attending private instruction in oil painting for 7 years, he studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, where he graduated 3 rd in his class. He was selected as “the most promising student” by the faculty and received the Margaret Hammond award. Following l5 years of research, he began conducting “Old Masters Painting Techniques Workshops”. He explains how some of the most innovative and noted artists in realistic art obtained their impressive aesthetic qualities. Robert's in-depth knowledge of the technical means to expression has played a significant role in the artistic advancement seen in his own paintings.
Elegance, Realism and
Meaning that is Timeless
Art is unity of “the good, the true and the beautiful” Aristotle. “We find that no quality comprehends such absolute and universal excellence as the ‘gem-like'. It comprehends the golden and the silvery, only adding the quality of transparency; the pearly, the glittering, the pure, the definite”—Sir Charles Eastlake (President of the British Royal Academy of Art). Robert says of inspiration in art: “The more convincing and appealing the artwork is to our senses, and the greater the impression of a complete harmony, the more intriguing it will become to our intellectual and spiritual sensibilities…So the key to achieving personal understanding is fine design work involving all aspects of art.”
In order to create this lively reality and harmony in his own work, Robert has expanded the range of expression by combining quite diverse painting procedures. The result is that his paintings can appear surprisingly naturalistic, as in his depictions of the elusive transparencies in glass and reflections and the brilliance of light radiating from flames and sparkling highlights. Numbers of people who have visited the world's major museums and European palaces have stated that they have never seen anything to compare with the genuine images of glass which are seen in Robert's paintings of still life.
Glass, because of the extreme visual contrasts, is regarded as a great challenge to a painter and Robert has mastered the secrets of the finest Dutch l7th Century artists in this regard. In addition, he delights in embellishing the designs of the objects seen in his paintings, thus increasing the interest and elegance of his compositions.
Robert's use of translucent color enhances the feeling of luminosity. Also, observed in his work are an impressive sense of three-dimensional space, fine detail and a wide range of subjects. Realizing the importance of utilizing the most permanent and flexible materials, he is one of the few artists who hand-grinds colored pigments. The first time he entered paintings in New York's national and juried art exhibitions—the Grand National, Allied Artists and Audubon Artists, all three of his works were accepted.
The artist follows the most severe discipline from preparation of the panels (which in it takes a minimum of a day) to the final varnishing. Varnishing in it is another most important matter.
