David Buckley Good was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1952. He received his Bachelor of fine Arts degree from Bowling Green State University in 1975 and moved to Arlington, Virginia where he began his career as a fine artist. He was a resident artist in the Arlington Art Center from 1976 until 1978 when he was awarded a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, allowing him to move to New York City to study painting at the Art Student's League. David lived, worked and exhibited in the New York area until 1986 when he moved to Baltimore , Maryland.
Until 1994, David worked predominantly in a surrealist style, creating oil paintings and drawings in the tradition of Yves Tanguy and Salvador Dali. His works are included in many private collections throughout the eastern United States, and also in the collection of the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University.
In 1972, while at Bowling Green , David read several books on the technical history of oil painting. He was particularly influenced by Secret Formulas and Techniques of the Old Masters , by Jacques Maroger, former director of the painting laboratory at the Louvre Museum . David continued to develop as a surrealist painter, applying classical methods as described by Mr. Maroger to his own very modern vision. Throughout the early years of his career, David often considered adopting a realist style.
In 1987 David met Ann Didusch Schuler, co-founder of The Schuler School of Fine Art in Baltimore and Mr. Maroger's painting assistant at the Maryland Institute-College of Art from 1941 until Maroger's death in 1962. David's association with The Schuler School rekindled his interest in realist painting. Already an accomplished modern painter, David enrolled in The Schuler School, using its rigorous classical training to make a complete conversion to realist painting.
As a member of the Oil Painters of America, David has been accepted into two national juried shows and one regional juried show; he received the Liquitex Award at the 1999 OPA show.
