Carl Nordell was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1885.
He became a painter and did etchings. He studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School with Tarbell; Art student League with Bridgman & DuMound; Academie Julian, with Laurens; and the Road Island School of Design.
