Philipp, Robert, n.a. (American 1895-1981)

Studied:

He studied at the Art Student League from 1910–14 with DuMond and Bridgeman. (A.S.L. was established in 1875 in New York City, it quickly became one of the country's most important art schools. Many art schools in major cities offered scholarships for study at the A.S.L. in New York. By the 1880's the ASL was forming branches in other cities.

He studied at the National Academy of Design with Volk, C. Curran, and Maynard from 1914–17. (National Academy of Design was established in 1825 in New York City. From 1865-99 it's building was on 23rd St. From 1899-40 the N.A.S. School was on 109 th Ct. & Amsterdam Avenue, while N.A.D. exhibitions (for most of the artists of this dictionary's time frame) were held at the American Fine Arts Society's galleries on 57 th St. The present building on Fifth Avenue was occupied in 1940. It also served as the headquarters for the Artists; Fellowship Inc.; American Watercolor Society, New York; Society of American Etchers, New York; and National Society of Mural Painters, New York. Many other organizations' exhibitions were held there. N.A.D.'s Antique School was free, but required a drawing exam for admission. Other courses, such as painting, had tuition.

He was a member of ANA, 1934 (Associate Member of the Nation Academy of Design);

N.A., 1945 (Full member of N.A. of Design); Lotos C., 1945 (Lotos Club established in 1870 as a social club, to which many prominent artists belonged.); International Society of Arts and Letters, 1959; and the F. Royal SA, 1965.

Exhibited:

NAD, 1922 (prize); Art Institute of Chicago, 1936 (Medal); Corcoran Gallery of Art, 1938 (Medal); Carnegie Institute, 1937 (Prize).

Works: Brooklyn Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Houston Museum of Fine Art, and private collections.

Positions:

Teacher at American School of Art (1940); University of Illinois (1941); American Student League and National Academy of Design, 1966.
